WHAT IS ARCTIC PULSE?

Arctic Pulse is a Canadian-led initiative focused on strengthening Arctic observing systems, community-driven research, and knowledge sharing across the North. Bringing together scientists, Indigenous knowledge holders, policymakers, and northern communities, Arctic Pulse aims to improve understanding of rapid environmental and social change in the Arctic while supporting sustainable and resilient futures feeding into the upcoming International Polar Year (IPY) 2032–2033. Building on previous IPYs, IPY 2032 and Arctic Pulse will highlight the importance of Indigenous leadership, interdisciplinary science, and international cooperation in addressing the urgent challenges facing polar regions in a changing climate.

ARCTIC PULSE’S VISION

  • To co-develop a world-class research network that undertakes science that supports policy and decision-making for oceans governance, sustainable shipping and economic development, and trains the next generation of Arctic marine and shipping research experts.

  • To leverage network assets (ships, people, and coastal infrastructure) to improve ocean, ice, and atmospheric observations along Arctic shipping routes; and,

  • To conduct science that supports:

    • Decision-makers to establish evidence-based policy and to position Canada as a global leader in Arctic oceans and shipping governance;
    • Industry to operate more efficiently and in a safer environment; and,
    • Arctic communities to mitigate local impacts and enhance economic opportunities.
